Who is this course designed for?

A course for beginners, covering basic maintenance of simple tractors and the most common farm machinery - bring your overalls and prepare to get stuck in! Just in time for hay making…

The course will cover the following:

The tractor;   Principles of operation, engine, fuel system, electrics, gearbox, hydraulics, hitching points.
We will do a basic lube and filter service on a small tractor along with details on how the various parts function.  What to look for if various parts don’t work. Preventative maintenance and safe operating practices.  Tools required.
VIDEO over lunch, building a CASE 1394.
We do not teach you how to drive a tractor but will show you how the parts work.

Machinery;   We will look at different types of mowers, disc, drum & conditioner.
Blade changing, lubrication. Power shafts & guards. Safe operation.
Linkage mounted equipment such as transport boxes and fertilizer spreaders.
Hay turners and balers, how they work. Lubrication and maintenance. Safety.
Trailers, both farm tipping trailers and livestock transport use such as Ifor Williams types.  Safe hitching methods and different types of coupling.
Tyres, pressures and maintenance. Electrics.

Summary and Questions;    while we encourage you to ask questions as we go through the day, this would be a good opportunity to ask questions and discuss answers over tea.

Handouts include: BAGMA vehicle testing sheets, trailer electrics pin-outs, Course details. Electric starting circuit. Charging details, Hydraulic circuits.  Parts suppliers details.

Please note: If for any reason you need to cancel your place on a course, 2 weeks notice prior to the course date will be required to receive a full refund. If you have reserved a place, please make sure we receive payment 3 weeks before the course (6 weeks for non-members). Thank you.

Most of our courses are aimed at adults and are quite intensive, so they are not aimed at children. If you would like to bring a child on a course please discuss it with the training manager before booking. It is assumed that bookings you make are for adults. Only people who have paid the course fee are allowed at the training venue. Do not bring pets or other animals to the training venue unless you are required to do so as part of the course. Most venues are working smallholdings and dogs or other animals (even if left in your car) are disruptive and compromise biosecurity.
